3 waves of feminism

First Wave:
The First wave of feminism was a time when feminist activity and thought. This occurred within the time of the 19th and early 20th century throughout the world. It focused on legal issues such as getting the right to vote for women. Women have the same potential or if not not more than men do.

Second Wave:
Coming off the heels of World War II, the second wave of feminism focused on the workplace sexuality, family and reproductive rights. America was already trying to restructure itself, it was understood that women had met their equality goals.

Third Wave:
This is about things such as the male and female pay, today it is argued a man will get paid more for doing the same job as a woman. People are also trying to stop the phrase 'like a girl' being an insult, it shouldn't be an insult to be a girl.

theory research

Freud 'Uncanny'
This is either strange or mysterious especially in an upsetting way is the definition of 'Uncanny'. However the definition written by Freud is that it excites people however scares them in general, the feeling is familiar. This theory was created in 1919 an example could be blood dripping as it can scare people but excites them what is next to them, people know what it is and possibly what is next to come.

Sadistic Voyeurism
Sadistic Voyeurism is by Laura Mulvey which was created in 1975. This is when people get pleasure from intimate activity then however the thing which makes it sadistic is that they intend on causing harm or pain to the other person. An example of sadistic voyeurism is Michael Powell's film 'Peeping Tom' where the serial killer takes pleasure in capturing images of the people he spied on and killed

Don't Breathe

Trailer analysis:

In this trailer of don’t breath there a various uses of media language for example we see a close up of the door when they assume the blind man is there however when they show he’s behind they use a long shot. This helps in creating a jump factor for the trailer as we assume one thing and we see the other of what was expected. Another shot used is when they zoom in to the blind man’s face, this shows that he is dominant therefore making the audience realised that they should fear his character. We also notice that they clothing they are all wearing is black or very dark apart from the blind man who is wearing a white vest. This is ironic due to the fact that white usually represents purity but in the trailer he is shown as the one who should be feared. Again in this scene when the blind man gets hold of who we can refer to the leader of the robbery everyone apart from the blind man show that they are scared to the audience. The leader is extremely nervous once caught we can see him quivering however the blind man only shows that he is strong and powerful therefore scaring the others. Again when the blind man has a hold of the leader and the leader speaks we see the use of a sound bridge, this is effective as he is referring to the others and they show them at that exact time.

This is a Hollywood production film. This film has been promoted through various ways one being the trailer itself, also within the trailer the text which pops up helps in intriguing people to watch the film. They also used a poster to advertise themselves; the poster is effective through the use of colour and images which would attract people to the film. This was a mainstream film shown in cinemas; it was probably shown within the last hours of primetime and throughout watershed hours. This is as in cinemas hour movies are usually shown from 9pm and after.

The main genre of this is the horror genre however there are sub genres of crime and thriller in this film. This had the general horror conventions such as sounds which make the viewer jump, silence which make the viewer wonder what will happen as moment of silence can be more effective than sound sometimes and finally the setting, this usually tends to begin in a normal environment however the deeper you get into the film the darkest the setting seems to get.

The representations shown in this trailer consist of gender, usually when there is one woman they either show her in a sexual manner or she dies first however this film breaks that stereotype, therefore the stereotypes are challenged in this film. Instead of doing what’s expected after the first guy dies she turns into the leader again breaking the stereotype of men being leaders. At first they show the blind man in a negative view but for a different reason, they all begin with believing apart from one that he is vulnerable. This is as they judge him for being blind and think that he is only capable of so much.

The audience aimed at both genders however aged at mainly teenagers to young adults as that are the ages of the main characters who break into his house. The social background is low class, we can understand this through the fact that these three people are trying to steal money which suggests that they need the money. This film can help in creating pleasure for the audience, they may find it exciting to watch with all the jumps and scares in.

Purpose of a Trailer

what i already know

The media language used in this trailer consists of various shots, sounds, codes and conventions which help in the process of making an effective horror trailer. for example in this trailer of The Woman In Black the trailer begins with the producers of the film however its very dark and it constantly fading into black. Then when the actual insight to the film begins it fades into black therefore giving the viewer the idea that the the film itself is going to be very dark and intense throughout. Also in the beginning they show small movement from items in the room for example the monkey who plays the harp and again the small and slow movements build up intensity for the trailer and the movie itself therefore encouraging people to watch it.

The institution who created the Women in Black was CBS film. CBS are an American film production and distribution company who were founded in the year 2007. CNS are also responsible for the film the last exorcism part II. As they are a fairly new company they have not produced to many films yet.
.
The Genre for The Woman In Black is a horror film but also has the the features of being a historical and mystery film. The main genre is horror its an old fashioned ghost film which is set in a creepy house and quite an abandoned place in general. However as it is set well in the past which adds to the horror sense as it is hazy along with a less modern approach to language. Finally its also apart of the mystery genre as we wonder why people are acting strange and why they are performing strange actions throughout. Again the mystery sub-genre adds to the horror aspect as the not knowing makes people wonder whats happening and the horror genre gives it that jump aspect.

The representation of Arthur Kipp who is the main character throughout the trailer is that he is a modern young man who seems to have a lot of authority, this is understood from his facial expressions. we also understand that he is from a posh background due to the attire he's wearing throughout the trailer. He also seems to be mysterious as in the trailer we see him discovering things he finds in the house and what they mean to him.

This could follow the ideology of Todorov's theory which is a reasonable normal setting which is disrupted by something which is strange. Next comes the quest to solve what has happened however in the trailer we can only assume this but in the trailer Arthur seems to find some clues therefore allowing us to presume that the theory is there.

Throughout this trailer there is a narrative of a young girl speaking throughout most of the trailer, before the girl begins to speak after there has been a brief showing of the house along with a few of the posessions such as the dolls. whilst she is speaking there is some sound in the background which is slow paced therefore giving the trailer a more intense feeling for the viewers. whilst she is speaking everything she speaks about matches the scene and again makes it seem more mysterious.

Brief

My A2 media coursework is a promotional package for a new horror film which will be made of a poster, magazine cover where the movie is featured in and a trailer. The reason  I chose a horror is because there are many codes and conventions which can be created in order to make an effective horror trailer. Therefore I will start off by conducting research into a range of horror trailers and watching the movies themselves in order to understand what types of codes and conventions which horror movies use in order to intrigue the audience. When it comes to my own trailer I will be put into a group where we will plan a storyboard, shot list, character profile and will soon start filming. In order to succeed with this task we will have to incorporate my knowledge of the codes and conventions of horror as well as my own unique touch into the trailer. In order for this to be successful we should communicate as a group and productively work together.
